Retro Space Cat (“us”, “we”, or “our”) operates the https://retrospacecat.com/ website (the “Service”). This page explains what personal data we collect when you use the Service, why, how long we keep it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.
Who we are
Retro Space Cat is the data controller for the personal data described here. You can contact us about anything in this policy at stardust@retrospacecat.com.
The data we collect
Data you give us
- Email address: to create your account, send you sign-in links and, if you’ve registered, daily reminders.
- Username: optional. If you choose one, it is shown publicly instead of your player ID.
- Your answers and choices in the game: for example which asteroid you pick, your trivia answers and what you buy in the shop.
Data created as you play
- Your player ID, Stardust history, Moonstones, streaks, medals, Space Cat’s mood and the items you own and wear.
- When you joined and when you last signed in.
- A record of the pages and stations you visit and the claims you make, linked to your account, which we use to understand how the game is played and to improve it.
Technical data
- IP address: recorded when you ask for a sign-in link, so we can stop links being requested too often.
- Browser type: recorded with each sign-in session, to help keep accounts secure.
- Page visits: we count the pages you visit, the type of device (mobile, tablet or desktop), the site that linked you here, and how long each page was on screen. We don’t use cookies for this. To count visitors, we use an anonymous code made from your IP address and browser that changes every day, so it can’t identify you or link your visits on different days. We never store your IP address for this.
- Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser and pages requested) for security and to fix faults.
What is public
Leaderboards and player profiles are public. They show your username (or, without one, your player ID), your Space Cat and what it’s wearing, and your Stardust earned, rank, streaks and medals. Anyone can see and share your Space Cat card. We never show your email address.
Why we use your data (our lawful bases)
- To provide the game and your account (sign-in, saving your progress, leaderboards, prizes and the shop): because it is necessary to provide the Service you have asked for (contract).
- To keep the Service secure and fair (limiting sign-in requests, spotting cheating and multiple accounts, fixing faults): our legitimate interests in running a safe, fair game.
- To understand and improve the game with our own records of how stations are used: our legitimate interests.
- Daily reminder emails: our legitimate interests in reminding players about a service they signed up for. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every reminder.
- Analytics and advertising cookies (Google Analytics and Google AdSense): your consent, where the law requires it.
Cookies
Cookies are small files that a website stores in your browser. We use:
- rsc_session (essential): keeps you signed in. It holds a random code and lasts one year, or until you log out.
- rsc_csrf (essential): a security cookie that protects your account against forged requests. It is deleted when you close your browser.
- Google Analytics (analytics, with consent): cookies such as
_gathat count visits and show how the Service is used. - Google AdSense (advertising, with consent where required): cookies used to show, measure and, if you allow it, personalise adverts.
When you first visit from the UK, the EU or the EEA, Google’s consent message asks for your choices about analytics and advertising cookies. Until you choose, analytics and advertising cookies are not used, and Google receives only cookieless signals. You can change your choices at any time using Privacy settings at the bottom of every page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, but you won’t be able to sign in without the essential cookies.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data, and we never share your email address with anyone for their marketing. We use these service providers, who process data on our behalf or as described in their own policies:
- Hostinger: hosts our website and database, and sends sign-in emails.
- Sendy, hosted by SendyBay: sends our daily reminder emails and keeps track of unsubscribes. We add your email address to our reminder list.
- Google Analytics: website statistics. We send your numeric player ID (never your email) when you are signed in, so visits from your different devices can be counted together.
- Google AdSense: advertising. Google may use cookies and your device’s information to show and measure adverts. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services, and manage your Google ad settings at adssettings.google.com.
We may also disclose personal data if the law requires it, or where necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of Retro Space Cat, our players or others.
Transfers outside the UK
Some of our service providers, such as Google, may process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer is protected by safeguards required by UK data protection law, such as the UK–US Data Bridge or approved contract terms.
How long we keep your data
- Your account and game history: for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your email address and personal details within 30 days.
- Sign-in link requests (email and IP address): deleted automatically after 30 days.
- Reminder list: until you unsubscribe or your account is deleted. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address on a do-not-email list so you are not added again.
- Sign-in sessions: deleted when you log out, or automatically one year after you signed in.
- Our own records of pages visited and stations played: deleted automatically after 26 months.
- Google Analytics data: kept for 14 months.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct data that is wrong;
- ask us to delete your data and your account;
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use your data;
- ask for your data in a portable format;
- withdraw your consent to cookies at any time, using Privacy settings at the bottom of every page.
To use any of these rights, email stardust@retrospacecat.com from the email address on your account. We will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first, so please contact us.
Security Of Data
We protect your data with measures such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), sign-in links that expire after 30 minutes and are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form, and limits on sign-in requests. However, no method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
Links To Other Sites
Our Service may contain links to other sites that are not operated by us, including adverts. If you click on a third party link, you will be directed to that third party’s site. We strongly advise you to review the Privacy Policy of every site you visit. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third party sites or services.
Children’s Privacy
Our Service does not address anyone under the age of 18 (“Children”).
We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 18. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected Personal Data from a child, we take steps to remove that information from our servers.
Changes To This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new Privacy Policy on this page and update the date at the top. If the changes are significant, we will also let you know by email or with a prominent notice on the Service before they take effect.
